Abstract

“The election controversy has been called the most devastating controversy ever to rock American Lutheranism.” With this controversy at the core, the Norwegian Lutheran Synod was in the midst of unrest because of the Madison Opgjer at the turn of the 19th century. This essay explores the historical events that took place leading to the formation of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod.
